Spanish Paintings in the Wallace Collection

Alonso Cano, Saint John the Evangelist's Vision of Jerusalem, 1635-38, Wallace Collection, London.

Spanish painters of the 17th century are set apart from other artists of their time by their use of colour and innovative use of paint. The collection of the Wallace Collection includes a modest but exceptionally fine group of works by some of the finest of these painters including Velázquez, Cano and Murillo, collected by the remarkable Richard Seymour-Conway, 4th Marquess of Hertford, during the 19th century. The Spanish Paintings in the Wallace Collection course will explore these paintings in depth and consider how and why each entered the Marquess’s collection.
