The Cloisters and the Jews in Medieval Spain: A Conversation on Art, Literature, and History

Co-organized by Fordham’s Center for Jewish Studies and The Met Cloisters, this round-table coincides with the Metropolitan Museum’s exhibition "Spain, 1000-1200: Art at the Frontiers of Faith" (August 30, 2021-January 30, 2022). The conversation includes three invited scholars who have pioneered work on Jewish life in medieval Spain: Peter Cole (Yale University), Katrin Kogman-Appel (University of Münster), and Jonathan Ray (Georgetown University). It covers the themes of the "Frontiers of Faith" exhibition, focusing particularly on Jewish presence within and across the geopolitical regions at the meeting points of Christian- and Muslim-ruled Spain, as well as the other kinds of “frontier zones,” or sites of intensive interaction between faiths, from urban markets to princely courts. The event was organized by Nina Rowe, Professor of Art History, Department of Art History and Music at Fordham University, in cooperation with Julia Perratore, Assistant Curator at The Met Cloisters.
