Baroque Brilliance: Drawings and Prints by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, Noah Guiding the Animals into the Ark, ca. 1660, Kunsthaus Zürich.

The Kunsthaus Zürich’s new exhibition is devoted to Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, one of the finest Italian draughtsmen, and his relationship with his great role model, Rembrandt. Castiglione, known as il Grechetto, commited his compositions to paper with a breathtaking nonchalance almost unparalleled among Baroque artists. At the same time, he was a pioneering experimenter in the field of printmaking. The monotype process he developed was still being used in the 19th century by artists such as Edgar Degas and Paul Gauguin.
