Leonardo and the Copy of the Mona Lisa

Leonardo and the copy of the Mona Lisa. New approaches to the artist’s studio practices presents the results of a new research project by the Prado and a number of other museums which hold paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and his circle such as the Musée du Louvre and the National Gallery, London. With works by pupils and followers including the Prado’s own copy of the Mona Lisa and new technical evidence, it considers the teaching methods and production of paintings in Italian studios in the late 15th and early 16th centuries as well as questions such as the concept of the original and the function and types of copies derived from prototypes created by the great masters.
