Rembrandt – Hoogstraten Colour and Illusion

Samuel van Hoogstraten, Head of a Bearded Man at a Window, 1653. Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, Picture Gallery, inv. 378

Samuel van Hoogstraten was Rembrandt’s pupil and, shortly after the latter’s death, recorded what he had learned in his Introduction to the Academy of Painting; or, The Visible World. This exhibition relates how Rembrandt’s powerful art left a lasting impression on his gifted pupil and provides unique insights into the fascinating interplay between them. It focuses on the impressive effect of colour and the astonishing illusionistic techniques with which Rembrandt and Hoogstraten fascinated viewers then and now. Loans from renowned museums all over the world, including the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum, the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum, have made it possible to show these sensational works together for the first time.
