Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s (1881–1973) death, the Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst (Sculpture Collection and Museum of Byzantine Art) has joined with the Museum Berggruen in a special presentation of the artist’s work at the Bode-Museum. Spanish Dialogues presents a selection of Picasso’s works from the Museum Berggruen in dialogue with the Bode’s collection of 14th-to-18th-century Spanish artworks. The great extent to which Picasso’s art practice was influenced by Spanish art history becomes immediately apparent, with the dialogical format revealing continuities as well as ruptures. The exhibition also marks the beginning of the new series Spanish Dialogues at the Bode-Museum that in its featuring of the Spanish collections goes beyond the customary art historical categories of genre and period.
